Events & Workshops

I love sharing my love for writing and what I have learned from great teachers and mentors. Online classes with Lin Benedek at WriteNow.ink is one way I connect with other writers. I also am fortunate to do workshops in various locations and am available and willing to travel, so please contact me with ideas. I also enjoy working with great friends such as yoga teacher Laurene Hayden and writing and healing teacher Sandi Marinella.

A Poem in Every Moment:

Writing Workshop at Flagstaff Arboretum

4001 S. Woody Mountain Rd

Flagstaff Arizona 86001

October 29, 2016

12:30-4:30pm

Life is constantly happening around us, every second of every day. It seems as if writing a poem would be easy. Still, as the poet Ellen Bass says, “There are poems everywhere all the time, but we can’t see them. We’re either moving too fast or we’re asleep.” At this workshop, we will both wake up and slow down—drawing on the community we form and on the peaceful beauty of the Flagstaff Arboretum—so we can see, hear, smell, taste, and feel the abundant life in our immediate space and from our memories. We will look together at poems that inspire us, we will write our own “poems of the moment,” and we will work to discover what makes a poem good, focusing particularly on line, image, and sound.

Please contact me for questions or information on registering. This workshop is sponsored by the Arizona Authors Association.

Line, Image, and Music: Key Elements of Poetry
Online class at WriteNow.ink
January 23 to March 3

No single element of poetry stands alone; each is distinctive only in relation to other elements. Looking closely at the intersections among line, image and sound in poetry can enhance our appreciation for poems and help us to improve our own writing craft.

This course is designed for poets at all levels of experience, including beginners. We will start with a discussion of writing in free verse—what it is and how poets write this way. During the course we will cover discovery of what to write about; learning craft elements; sustaining momentum and taming the inner critic; workshopping; revising; and possibly submitting to a journal or contest.
